Russ Gomm’s ‘Dark Roads’ reminded me of the days when Michael Mann spoke to us in sleek, sharp (and many times silent) images that resonate on many levels like ‘Thief’ and ‘Manhunter’. Gomm and partner Adam Modley work the audience into a suspenseful lather with their tale of love, loss and quiet revenge, told with nary a nick of dialogue, which makes for a powerful viewing experience since one can only rely on the expertly framed angles that don’t adhere to ADD-addled quick cuts and a lush, haunting soundscape. The talented souls at Aurora Pictures have already solidified themselves as total craftsmen in a new media world, from the grimly accomplished ‘Dark Roads’ to their horror shorts ‘Blood Relative’ and ‘Presence’, and I’ll be watching everything they do with anticipation. One can only imagine what they can do with the parameters of a feature film.”
